Based in the U.K., Daniel Balint-Kurti joined OCCRP in 2022 to lead our enterprise team. Previously, Daniel was head of investigations at Global Witness, where he led several high-profile investigative projects and headed the training program.

Daniel began his journalistic career as a financial reporter with Dow Jones Newswires in London in the 1990s, before being sent to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, as West Africa bureau chief. During this period, he won Dow Jones’ Journalist of the Year award for a series chronicling the country’s descent into civil war. He also worked in Nigeria as a reporter and editor for Reuters and headed the Associated Press’s Lagos bureau.

On his return to the U.K. in 2006, Daniel became an associate fellow for Chatham House and worked as an editor on The Times foreign desk. He joined Global Witness in 2010, leading its Democratic Republic of Congo team, before taking wider responsibility for the organization’s investigative reporting. Along with his colleague Leigh Baldwin, Daniel was nominated for Private Eye’s prestigious Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism in 2017, for their report on fraud and corruption in London’s junior stock exchange.
